Driving License Category C
A commercial driver's licence is a driving license of category C. It permits drivers to drive straight trucks, buses, and combination vehicles. This license also permits drivers to operate passenger vans, small hazardous material (HAZMAT) and combination vehicles.
Class C license holders, like professionals who have earned Class CDLs can obtain endorsements to enhance their credentials and increase their job opportunities. The most common endorsements include:
Passenger vehicles
You must have a class-C driver's license to drive an automobile, truck, van, or rental vehicle, such as a Uhaul. The driver's manual for each state will provide details of the vehicles that qualify. There are other endorsements available to add to an CDL in addition to the H. The N endorsement permits drivers to operate tanker vehicles that transport sometimes volatile liquids and gasses. To obtain this endorsement truckers must pass a niche knowledge test. The T endorsement allows truckers to operate triple and double trailers, which require additional understanding and skills. The X endorsement requires that truckers pass a niche knowledge test in order to operate tanker vehicles transporting explosive materials.
Each motor vehicle that contains Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 materials must be attended at all times by the driver or an agent of the motor transporter. This requirement applies both to interstate and intrastate transportation, as well as to shipments and vehicles carrying hazardous materials.
Drivers of trucks who only drive for local delivery are not qualified for the endorsement for hazmat. Drivers must have at least two years of driving experience to be eligible for this endorsement.
